Liquore Strega is likely Italy’s oldest and most famous liqueur. The original recipe, with the correct blending proportions, has been passed down from generation to generation. The recipe includes over 70 different herbal aromas from around the world. For example, herbs such as cinnamon from Ceylon, pepper from Jamaica, and juniper from the Apennine Mountains are used. After soaking the many herbs, the mixture is distilled. The distillate is reduced to 40% with sugar, syrup, and a tiny bit of saffron, which gives the liqueur its clear yellow color. Finally, the distillate is aged in large wooden casks.
